in between art and code

David Bowen makes kinetic, robotic, interactive and sculptural works. You could say he is particularly interested in the relation between nature and machine. Most of his kinetic work uses an organic input source resulting in an artificial interpretation of the robot.
fly drawing device

There is the fly drawing device for example. A few flies are locked in a small chamber with sensors. As the flies move, the robot is translating the their input into drawings.

growth modeling device

In this installation the state of an onion plant is captured with a 3D scanner. The robot is drawing the state of the plant in real-time. When it is finished building the process is started all over again.

growth rendering device

Not unlike the growth modeling device this installation is drawing the growth of a plant.
